Yahoo! La Nina has been very kind to the Resort of Whistler this season dumping a total of 583cm (230") or 18+ Feet of snow since the start of the season with heaps more snow on it's way! In the last 24 hours we have had 23cm bringing the snowbase to a healthy 215cm (84") - as measured at Pig Alley Weather Station at 1650 meters on Whistler Mountain.

So with 15 days to go before the kick off to GayWhistler's WinterPRIDE it is looking like we are in really good shape. We saw a jump in tickets this past week when Whistler Blackcomb & Tourism Whistler released a surprise 72-hour sale helping to spur some of those fence sitters to jump over to Whistler and take advantage of the incredible snow conditions.

Passing of Sarah Burke

The Mayor and the Resort Municipality of Whistler released the following statement after the tragic loss of Whistler freestyle skier Sarah Burke. January 19, 2012 - On behalf of the council and staff of the Resort Municipality of Whistler and the community of Whistler, our thoughts and prayers are with Sarah’s family and friends following this tragic loss.

Along with her accomplishments on the slopes, Sarah will also be remembered for her efforts to make half pipe skiing an official Olympic event.

Sarah will always be recognized as a pioneer in her sport of freestyle skiing and a legend to all those who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Sarah was one of our own and this is a very sad day for our community.

Program Highlights
Dates
WinterPRIDE is Sunday, February 5th, 2012 through Sunday, February 12, 2012. GUIDING IS MONDAY, Feb. 6th -SATURDAY, FEB. 11th.
Traditional Program
Our traditional program continues this year meeting between Whistler and Blackcomb. This year we are starting the program on Whistler and ending the week on Blackcomb.

ATAC!
ATAC stands for All Terrain, All Conditions. This is the new name of our experts-only program.

Women’s guiding program
If there are enough women for a group, they will once again have the opportunity to ski or ride in women-only groups by meeting at specific women’s guiding signs. Obviously not all will take advantage of this, but we want to offer this service to help continue to build the women’s program.

Scheduling
Since we have a much better understanding of our day-to-day needs, scheduling will be specific this year. We will, of course, do the absolute best we can to accommodate your schedule. BTW, we already know we need you on Thursday, Friday and Saturday! LOL!

Minimum Volunteer Requirements
We ask that all guides, volunteer a minimum of 2 days. And our preference is that those two days include either Thursday, Friday, or Saturday if possible.

Training Requirements
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY. If you guided and received training last year, you DO NOT need to attend on-snow training this year AS LONG AS you attend the Sunday, February 5th guide meeting/party that will be held on the evening of Sunday, February 5th in the WinterPRIDE hospitality suite area at the Aava Whistler Hotel (4005 Whistler Way, Whistler) If you can not make that, YOU MUST attend one of the on-snow training sessions. The only exceptions are Whistler Blackcomb ski instructors and volunteer guides. If you did not guide last year, you will need to attend on-snow training. Please don't ask for an exception - I can't make it.

Positions Available
This year, there are three distinct positions in the guiding program.
Guide - Responsible for safely guiding WinterPride groups of varying ability.
Sign Master - Responsible for strategically placing signs in the Go Zone.
Pod Leader - Responsible for greeting and interviewing guests to determine the best group. You will coordinate guest assignments for a specific level or program such as green, black, women's program, ATAC!, etc. You will also be responsible for getting guest counts for each group and turning them into John.

This year, Manny Lehman returns to Whistler for Snowball 20 and from what we understand the light show and visuals this year are sure to impress! 2011 a Year in Review

2011 was a very exciting year in the LGBT community with some key advancements and few very disappointing set backs. GayWhistler continues to be very active in helping to create a safer and more accepting environment for the LGBT community and are proud to share a snap shot of 2011.

American Pop Culture had an enormous effect on the LGBT community with Lady Gaga leading the charge with the “Best Video with a message” at the MTV awards and the LGBT community embracing a new gay anthem “Born this way.” Katie Perry sang about sexual diversity in “Last Friday Night” and PINK’s “Perfect” grabbing hold just at the end of 2010 and climbing to the top of the charts in early 2011 as she encouraged her fans to be proud of who they are. Rihanna also released her Billboard #1 single S&M which also had themes of sexual diversity. On the small screen (TV) “GLEE” continued to reach millions sharing their message of acceptance of diversity with their various themes dealing with homophobia, school bullying, and alcohol abuse. We saw our first Transgender TV Star take centre stage on “Dancing with the Stars” as Cher & Sonny Bono’s transgender son, Chaz Bono stepped up and showed America how well he could dance and hold his own despite huge public protest in allowing him to participate on the show. We had some disappointments as well when Tracy Morgan went off on a rant claiming that he “would stab his son if he were gay.” Gay A-list actors Neil Patrick Harris hosted the Tony’s while Jane Lynch hosted the Emmy’s showing America that you can be out and successful.

From Pop Culture we turn our heads towards the political landscape and no doubt one of the most inspiring speeches came from the US Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton as she addressed the United Nations on the International Day on Human Rights. Her thirty minute address specifically acknowledged that LGBT rights are Human Rights and Human Rights are LGBT Rights. This address only re-enforces the creditability and relevance of the LGBT community where in July the United Nations after many years of lobbying granted the IGLTA (Int’l Gay Lesbian Travel Assoc.) official consultative status to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The BC Government dropped the ball when it released their official “Tool Kit for Marketing to China” by specifically asking BC businesses NOT to market or promote any ‘gay activities’ to the Chinese market. This was thankfully quickly retracted and was a huge source of embarrassment to Tourism BC.

We did see some good progress made on the LGBT youth front as the Vancouver based non-profit “Out in Schools” was recognized by the nation’s largest public foundation dedicated to social justice and the environment as one of Tides Canada’s ‘Top 10 of 2011.’ The program however, had some controversy though, as some Vancouver parents accused the program of encouraging or promoting homosexuality. What the program does do is educate the youth on sexual diversity where the children have all the information they need to make informed decisions. Know that what they may be feeling, is normal and that they are not alone. That being said, teenage suicide and bullying continued to dominate the headlines in 2011. In an unprecedented move the National Governments in both the US and Canada released their own “It Gets Better” videos. In Canada, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird responded to the tragic suicide death of Ottawa teenager, Jamie Hubley, by calling on all Canadians to promote tolerance and acceptance. “Bullying, homophobia, intolerance and incivility have no place in our schools,” Baird said. “It underlies the real challenge of depression and mental health, especially among young people.” US President Obama among other high profile American celebrities such as Lady Gaga and Anderson Cooper release their own “It Gets Better” videos in raising awareness and action.

South of the boarder, the United States, continues to grabble with equality among all their citizens, specifically with marriage. We witnessed the US President Obama publicly challenging the “Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)” as America continues to determine if marriage is a ‘State’ or ‘Federal’ right. The number one most watched political YouTube video (for 2011) was that of a 19-year old Zach Wahls who spoke about “Family” while addressing the Iowa State assembly on the topic of same sex marriage. His compelling address was well received and the state of Iowa continues to allow same-sex marriage, however by 2013 the Republicans are projected to take control of the Senate which could allow for this “right” to be revisited and taken away. New York State legalizes Same Sex Marriage while California continues to fight ‘Proposition 8’ to win back their right to marry the person they love.

US Petty Officer 2nd Class Marissa Gaeta was chosen to deliver the ritual ‘first kiss’ after the docking of a naval ship commemorating the end of the Iraq war. The significance of this is Gaeta is a lesbian and also shows the changing mood of the US military with the repeal of DADT - Don’t Ask Don’t Tell allowing gay and lesbian soldiers to be out at work. What is even more interesting is US Presidential candidate, Rick Perry, released his ‘Strong’ YouTube video which highlighted how terrible America has become now that openly gay & lesbian soldiers can serve in the Armed Forces. His video was the third most watched political video on YouTube (2011) and also become YouTube’s most dislike video in its history.

2011 saw some amazing advancements within professional sports when the NBA, MLB and the NHL all took disciplinary actions against Kobe Bryant (LA Lakers), Joakim Noah (Chicago Bulls), Roger McDowell (Atlanta Braves), Wayne Simmonds (Philadelphia Flyers) for using anti-gay slurs. We also saw a few more athletes come out including Kajsa Bergqvist (Swedish Olympic bronze medalist), Steven Davies (British cricket), Graeme Obree (Scottish Cycling), Mike Verschuur (Dutch Automobile racing), Jeffry Wammes (Dutch Gymnastics), Johnny Weir (US Figure Skating), David Testo (Soccer), Ian Roberts (Australian Rugby), Rick Welts (Phoenix Suns), Jonathan de Falco (Belgium Soccer) Michael Irvin (Dallas Cowboys) straight ally helping to fight homophobia both on and off the field. Vancouver & Whistler also welcomed the 2011 North America Outgames where at the Human Rights Conference the organization was able to pass a declaration for the various sporting bodies within BC and beyond to create safe sporting environments for all athletes, coaches and trainers.

So what does this all mean? 2011 was a year of incredible advancements in LGBT rights in many parts of the world, however we also witnessed that if we are complacent and do not fight for our rights and freedoms they can be taken away faster than what it took to achieve them. What happens in the US and abroad can have an effect on Canadian policy. We have seen that when our community is given a safe environment to be authentic their contribution to society is so much stronger. It is our hope that 2012 and beyond reporting on such milestones will be a non event.

It is that time of year that we look back at 2011 and reflect on all the events that have helped shape tomorrow. It has been an amazing year with one of our most successful WinterPRIDE's back in February. GayWhistler then spent several months traveling to various prides showing our support and meeting new friends along the way. Some of the prides we were able to attend include: Sao Paulo (Brazil), New Westminister (BC), Victoria (BC), Salts Spring Island (BC), Vancouver (BC), Calgary (AB), Seattle (WA), Palm Springs (CA), Brussels (Belgium). We also participated in various conferences including the IGLTA in Fort Lauderdale (FL), Travel Gay Canada in Montreal (QC), CMI in Palm Springs (CA), and the BC Pride Summit and the 2011 North America Outgames here in Vancouver.

Fit Tips by Brandon | Don't Cheat Yourself!

If something gets skipped in a workout, everyone seems to cut out warm ups, cool downs and stretching. Don’t cheat yourselves; these are integral parts of your workouts!

Warming up is really important to prevent injuries; in fact at the YMCA we don’t allow late comers to group fitness classes because jumping right into exercise can cause sprains, strains and many other injuries. It is universally accepted that dynamic active stretching is most effective before a workout. What this means is keep moving while you’re stretching. Five to ten minutes on a Concept II Rowing machine is ideal because it is a full body warm up! Try to include every joint.

Cooling down is also critical. If your heart is still pumping fast and your limbs are resting, pressure within your blood vessels builds up, leading to many different health problems including varicose veins!

Don’t cut out your stretching! Range of motion and ease within your muscles and tendons are so important during any muscular exertion. Your posture will improve (with proper form and technique during training) and you’ll feel more comfortable in your daily life. Have a safe workout!

Fit Tips by Brandon | Eating for the Holidays

The holiday season is coming up and something we all enjoy during this time is great food. Before you dip in here are a few tips to dispel some nutrition myths and make healthier choices. It’s important to understand the basics about food and that fifty percent of your calories should come from carbohydrates, twenty-five from protein and twenty-five from fats. It’s important to note that like blood types, we all have nutrition types and individual body compositions and that no meal plan is good for everyone.

A lot of fad diets talk about “carb cutting”. This is half true. We should be cutting down our simple carbs like breads and sweets, but eating more complex carbs like potatoes, vegetables and pasta. Believe it or not athletes in general over eat their protein but we only need about 1.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day and it should be spaced out throughout our day. Polyunsaturated fats like nuts, fish oil and olive oils are the fats we need and avoid saturated fats like deep fried foods and butter or margarine. Strict diets are tough to adhere to so make small choices to improve the way you eat.

If you’re planning on hitting the slopes this winter, be sure to prepare your body for the snowy excitement. Training specificity is important in any sport so make sure you strengthen your lower body. The key is going to be in training your legs, back and abs. Squats, lunges, dead lifts and crunches will prepare you nicely for your slopes, jumps and cross-country endeavours. For all you body builder types, this may be bad news; reduce your weight and pump out 12-15 reps in each exercises instead of your usual smaller sets. We want to prepare ourselves for long lasting endurance rather than short explosive movements. Form is important to note and will help you exhaust the right muscles and reduce injury in general. Speaking of reducing injuries, don’t hit the slopes cold! A ten minute warm up will benefit you significantly in cold weather. Great training will enhance your game this winter so get ready and have fun!

The return of La Nina and an incredible snowmaking infrastructure deliver another early opening to Whistler Blackcomb

WHISTLER, BC, Monday, November 14, 2011 – Whistler Blackcomb is thrilled to announce Whistler Mountain will open six days early on Friday, November 18. The return of La Nina, forecasted to bring greater than average snowfall, has skiers and snowboarders excited about the start of the ski/ride season. Blackcomb Mountain will open on Thursday, November 24, Whistler Blackcomb’s official opening day.

“Cold temperatures, early season snow fall and the relentless work of our mountain operations teams is what allows us to open early,” says Doug MacFarlane, Mountain Manager at Whistler Blackcomb. “Early season conditions apply but we are very happy with the current conditions. Enjoying the first turns of the season is always an amazing feeling and we are very excited to announce Whistler Mountain will open six days early.”

The alpine forecast is calling for up to 35 centimeters of snow in the alpine before opening on Friday, adding to the current snow base of 55 centimeters at Pig Alley. Additionally, the Whistler Blackcomb snowmaking team has turned over 50 million gallons of water into snow so far this season, the equivalent of covering 250 football fields with up to one foot of snow.

Whistler Mountain will open for the season on Friday, November 18, from 8:30am to 3:00pm. Skiing and riding will be open on the Emerald Express, Big Red Express, and Franz’s Chair with upload access from the Creekside Gondola and the Whistler Village Gondola.

Caution should be exercised at all times as the terrain available is best-suited for intermediate to advanced boarders and skiers. With early season conditions it is extra important all mountain signage is obeyed and guests stay within the marked operational boundary. Rope and signage saying “Temporary Boundary” will be used during the early season. With early season snow-pack, guests should be aware of rocks and other hazards below the snow surface.

More accolades come rolling in for Whistler Blackcomb this week.

Freeskier releases their top picks for the 2011/12 season and Whistler Blackcomb is #1 again. The editors note what makes WB #1 in their eyes are “... the terrain is still the best lift-accessed in North America, and there’s still more of it than you ski in a season. The five terrain parks and two halfpipes will keep even the most die-hard park rat happy day in day out.” The editors continue on about the epic snow conditions “especially last year” (and this year’s forecast of a strong La Nina with another incredible snow year), the pro scene “off the charts”, the apres-ski culture is “beyond comprehension” and finally the “late-night partying is still the best on the continent for a ski town and is amongst the best in the world.”

GayWhistler’s WinterPRIDE is thrilled to welcome Jason Stuart! Jason is no doubt, one of the most successful openly gay male comics in the United States, with over 150 Film & TV shows to his credit. He has performed at all the major Gay Events including Atlantis & RSVP cruises, Bear Life (NY), HRC Night of Comedy, Gay Days (Orlando), and Homolarius to name a few. Jason has performed at The Montreal Comedy Festival twice, on Broadway, all the "A" Comedy Clubs and to 100,000 people at the Millennium March in D.C. He has had his own cable TV special “Jason Stuart: Making It To The Middle” in addition to appearances on “One Night Stand Up” & “Wisecrack” on LOGO and “Comics Unleashed”.

As an actor he was recently seen in a cameo on HBOs ENTOURAGE with Andrew “Dice” Clay & regular Kevin Dillon. Later this year on TV, Jason has a supporting role as "Chief Maurice" in the thriller HOME INVASION starring C. Thomas Howell & Haylie Duff. In the indie film world he has 4 films coming out this year THE STAND IN, MONKEY MAN, FINDING MR. WRIGHT and WALK A MILE IN MY PRADAS. The Whistler High Note trail is FINALLY open, and SkiOUT is finally going hiking this Saturday, August 20th, 2011 10AM
Forecast: Sunny, Hot 28C, UV Index is HIGH so ensure you pack your sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat!

If you are unfamiliar with hiking in Whistler... this is one of the best and most accesible high alpine hiking experiences you can get. If you are only able to do one hike this year, this is the hike you will want to do. Not only is the scenery breathtaking, the alpine flowers are stunning, the ride on the world record breaking Peak 2 Peak is an absolute must, hiking between giant walls of snow and of course hanging out with a kewl group of 'Mo's is the icing on the cake - sort of speak!

The Details:
Parking lots 4&5 are still free...parking lots 1/2/3 $12/day.

Meeting spot: Whistler Village at the base of the Gondolas...watch for the rainbow flag. We leave at 10:00am SHARP so be there early! We head towards Blackcomb for our chair lift up. If you are late...take the Whistler Village Gondola up and meet us at the Roundhouse around 11ish

From Blackcomb, we take the Peak to Peak across to Whistler, meet up with any late hikers, and head up the Peak Chair and over to the High Note Trail.
We stroll the High Note Trail (7km return moderate level hike with some moderate elevation change) We have lunch around 1ish overlooking Cheakamus Lake - remember your packing your own lunch...so make it good! For those that prefer Gone Bakery in the Village Square packs a hearty sandwich / picnic bag to go!

After lunch we head back via snow packed Symphony and Harmony bowls...alpine lake swim anyone? In the past years, this has been a favourite stop and refresh in the glacier fed lake! We will head back to the Roundhouse, grab the gondola down were we will an refreshing beverage at Blacks Pub to wind down the day... we expect to be back in the village around 5ish

Outgames EcoChallenge - Whistler Strikes Gold!

The weather gods provided the 2011 Vancouver Outgames EcoChallenge warriors amazing weather conditions for a truly epic adventure race at Lost Lake Park in Whistler, BC. The racers endured a 10KM track with an approximate elevation gain of 1,000 feet over seven disciplines: Running, Mountain Biking, Swimming, Rappel, Building a raft and paddel, Tyrolean Traverse, and Orienteering. Each team needed to complete a series of six check points to collect a ribbon, each ribbon a different color and together they make up a Rainbow Pride Flag.

The first Medals for the Outgames have been awarded to the EcoChallengers below! Congratulations!

Shock Result - Serena “Willie-Ams” beaten by Cornelius the Beaver

In a shock result Serena Willie-Ams was beaten by Cornelius the Beaver, mascot for Canadian Pacific in a hard fought tennis exhibition game.

Serena Willie-Ams took on all-comers at the Vancouver Summer Live 125th Birthday event which took place in Stanley Park on July 9th, 2011. This appearance is prior to taking her place on centre court at the North America 2011 Vancouver Outgames running July 25-31, 2011.

Serena took on 20 competitors in a ``best of three shots game`` with opponents having the opportunity to win prizes by beating her. Serena arrived in style in her Pink Limo driven by her chauffeur Ryan.
Serena`s 20 competitors included three mascots; Bee Bop from the Vancouver Aquarium, Parka from Parks Canada and Cornelius from Canadian Pacific and 17 women, men, girls and boys who attempted to beat Serena in this tennis challenge. They proved to be a wonderful group of competitors, ideally suited for this equal opportunity challenge, highlighting the nature of the Outgames - diversity & inclusivity.

Cornelius proved to be the surprise star tennis player beating Serena 2 to 1 while 2 of the children and one of the adults also managed to win their prizes. Volunteers were recruited as ball boys, linesmen and cheerleaders and the huge crowd blew whistles and enthusiastically cheered on their favourites.

Serena is actually a local athlete participating in the North America 2011 Outgames which are being hosted in Vancouver this year in recognition of the city`s dedication to equal rights and opportunities. Serena, real name Symone Says, admits that Serena is only her ``Nomme de Sport”. ``I admire the real Serena, both on and off the court, and want to emulate her feistiness, spirit of adventure and of course, sporting ability,” said Symone.

John Boychuk (President of the Vancouver 2011 Outgames) said of the match. ``I had total confidence in Serena, her ball play has to be seen to be believed, but Cornelius proved to be a very capable beaver”.

Venus and Serena “Willie-Ams” Exhibition Tennis Game

July 8, 2011 (Vancouver, B.C.) Venus and Serena Willie-Ams will be in Vancouver, B.C. to take part in an exhibition tennis match at the Vancouver Summer Live event taking place in Stanley Park on July 9th, 2011 prior to taking centre court at the North America 2011 Vancouver Outgames running July 25-31, 2011.

The “twins” are actually local athletes participating in the Vancouver 2011 Outgames which are being hosted in Vancouver this year in recognition of the city`s dedication to equal rights and opportunities.

The twins, real names Symone Says and Afrodesia Jenkins, admit that Venus and Serena are only their ``Nommes de Sport”. ``We admire Venus and Serena, both on and off the court, and want to emulate their feistiness, spirit of adventure and of course, sporting ability,” said Symone.

John Boychuk (President of the Vancouver 2011 Outgames) says of the match. ``I think it will be a very exciting game and I`m having a hard time trying to guess the eventual winner. Venus has a very strong serve and Serena`s ball play has to be seen to be believed”.

The exhibition match takes place at 3.00pm on Saturday July 9th at Brockton Oval in Stanley Park and attendance is free. During the Outgames, Venus and Serena will be found on the tennis courts in Stanley Park or propping up the bar at the Plaza of Nations “Cultural Festival”.

WinterPRIDE Day 4

It's cold in Whistler but WinterPRIDE 2011 is heating up! BC's biggest and best ski resort is full of happenin homos from all over the world. The week is not even half over and I've talked to people from the US, UK, Sweeden, and of course... Canada!

This is Rob Easton, host of OUTtv's Don't Quit Your Gay Job standing in for Dean while his busy off organizing the extravaganza known as Winter Pride. I'll be running the @GayWhistler twitter account throughout #WinterPRIDE. Lemme know how you're doing!

The best part of the week so far has been watching how much Whistler has embraced the gays. Normally a fairly hetero place, the town is going out of its way to welcome us. One, rainbow banners and flags are everywhere, in store windows, on the street sign posts.

And two, sexy straight surfer snowboarder dudes posing for photos... shirtless (see left). Well at least he knows his market. He is one of the servers at Merlin's. where we had our après ski on Monday. I was especially amused when he said to our photographer, Mike Verbergt, "No we can do better than that."

Travelocity Never Roam Alone Ski Guide - Training

Jan. 8th, 2011 was our first WinterPRIDE event of the season with the Travelocity Never Roam Alone Ski Guide Training day. Ski Guide Manager, John Sutherland, took a group of guides up onto Whistler & Blackcomb mountains for safety and coaching training.

The Snow conditions were incredible and a lot of great tips on how to be a better guide were learned. The day started out with a breakfast meeting at the Dubh Linn Gate Irish Pub within the Pan Pacific Whistler Mountainside. The guides learned about safety, the ski guide perks along with a presentation from Whistler Blackcomb, followed by an update on some of the programming for WinterPRIDE.

Next it was time to get out on the slopes and get some hands on experience - or at least "ski/board on experience!" We traveled up the Excalibur Blackcomb Gondola and raced around the various zones of Blackcomb including: The Glaciers, Terrain Park, Crystal, GMC Race Course and then down for lunch to the Glacier Creek Lodge. After lunch we headed over to the Peak 2 Peak and crossed over the valley to Whistler. Incredible views and within 11 minutes we are on Whistler Mountain!

After a great day on the slopes it was time to do some Apres Ski action at Dusty's with the local gay & lesbain ski club - skiOUT! Nothing like the crisp clean taste of Whistler Beer after a great day on the mountains. For more photos of the day click here to visit our Flickr photo stream!

Silver Reef Hotel Casino Spa - The perfect Shopping Getaway!

Randi has been after me for a while to come down and cross the boarder and experience the Silver Reef Hotel Casino Spa just outside of Bellingham. When driving down the i5 it is hard to miss the huge Casino sign and like a moth drawn to light I was guided into the Hotel Casino.

As I walked into the lobby of the hotel and presented myself to the front desk, I was immediately welcomed by Randi, Hotel Sales Director, and had she had my room key and check in was over in mere seconds. We then headed towards the casino to one of their signature food & beverage outlets: "The Steakhouse at Silver Reef" here we were met by the Casino's F&B director, Rian, and we all sat down for dinner. I knew I would be in for a treat when you consider that Wine Spectator has given the Steakhouse their "Awards of Excellence" and the Wine Enthusiast the "Award of Distinction."

We enjoyed beautiful pairings of wine & port throughout dinner. Some of the specialities we tried included: Carpaccio of Beef with Truffle Oil, baby greens, artichoke hearts and grain mustard ($9), as well as the Jumbo Prawn cocktail served with a zesty cocktail sauce ($14), followed by a Caesar Salad ($8) prepared table side.
Then we were entertained by the incredible showmanship of tableside service of Steak Diane a tender Filet Mignon sauteed with shallots, thyme, mustard seed and mushrooms ($37) and a Steak au Poivre a tender Filet Mignon, in a peppercorn brandy sauce ($37). The steaks were prepared perfectly and just melted in my mouth. The service and the culinary delights were some of the best I have experienced. Just when I thought I couldn't have any more... the dessert cart came out.... OMG, talk about tempting creations... I ended up savouring the Chocolate Rockettes which is a house specialty. It is a souffle-like chocolate cake served warm with a molten center served with vanilla bean ice cream ($7). the Steakhouse is an incredible dining experience and excellent value.

The Casino and Hotel are inspired by First Nations art and artifacts. The guest rooms are well appointed and they have a private floor (6th Floor Diamond Club). I had the privilege of staying in the Emerald Suite (613). It was a one bedroom suite perfect for entertaining. It has two bathrooms, large wet bar and living room complete with your own private massage chair and 50" Flat screen. The master bedroom and ensuite were to die for. Large walk in shower, double man jetted bath and amenities by H2O.

So what was great about this property is it's location. Within minutes you are in Bellingham with all the outlet Malls and BellisFair Mall, within an hour to Seattle... ferry service to Vancouver Island and an hour to Vancouver. Making this destination a perfect city escape or using the property as a base to explore these three great cities (Seattle, Victoria, Vancouver). You could also use the property as an airport hotel considering they now have non-stop flights to Hawaii and other sun destinations!

four finalists on NBC’s 2006 “Last Comic Standing,” and she is "The Last Woman Comic . . .. "

She has appeared on The Joy Behar Show, Byron Allen's Comics Unleashed, and the OUTlaugh festival on MTVs LOGO.

She opened for the Smothers Brothers and is headlining all over the country in comedy clubs, cruises, corporate events, JCC's country clubs and more! She is appropriate for all audiences...well, maybe not children's parties!

No, there will be no Julie Andrews, but the line up for DJ’s this year at GayWhistler’s WinterPRIDE 2011 is gonna shake the mountain. Thursday, Feb. 3rd Pool Party starts off with JC Simon of the globally distributed monthly mix show "JC Simon's ARCADIA". Influenced by the likes of Tiesto, Jason Nevins and Klubjumpers, his true talent, skill and ongoing love of music keeps his beats solid, crowd pleasing and mainstream.

Friday, Feb. 4th keeps rocking at the Village T-Dance with Marcus Purnell, excited to return to the stage this year marking his first appearance at Whistler since he was first heard at the closing party for Altitude 11. With a music career that has spanned more than two decades with residencies and appearances at some of the most prolific nightclubs and events in North America, Marcus Purnell has entertained dance floors with his unique style combining rolling house rhythms and riveting vocal progressions.

Saturday, Feb. 5th - Snowball with open with local rising DJ Adam Dreaddy. Dreaddy has been throwing down some serious tracks over the past 3 years and there are no signs of slowing down. His passion for this art has far exceeded his expectations and everyday it’s a new track, a new skill learned and a new outlook on life. Having learned techniques such as beat matching vinyl, and Cd's, he launched himself in small lounges and restaurants all around Vancouver. Ending the week at Snowball is DJ Eddie Baez, widely known throughout the dance music community. His impact upon dance floors worldwide is undisputed by industry peoples and dance music fans alike. Because of his genuine soul, vigorous persistence, and deep passion for music, Eddie Baez has blossomed into "superstar" status within the industry. Eddie has had much success with his innovative, tribal-inflected remixes of songs, representing some of the industry's most successful artists. Eddies recent version of Crazy, by Warner Brothers artist, Seal, hit the top of the Billboard Dance charts in its first weeks out, and continues to chart today. GayWhistler's WinterPRIDE - the evolution of the annual Gay & Lesbian ski/snowboard festival is made only possible by the generous support of our sponsors and for the army of Volunteers. Why do so many people give their time and volunteer for the festival? Some say it is a great way to meet people from all over the world, others volunteer because their partner is out skiing and they want to be kept busy and have fun, some do it as a "Volunteer-cation" i.e. combining their vacation and volunteering as a great way to economize their vacation. Some volunteer because they want to give back to the community.

Everyone has a different reason to get involved and help shape what the festival is today. Everyone has the same general goal: That is to make this one of the most open, welcoming, fun and friendly winter events on the planet! There are a variety of roles that need to be filled including:
- Documentation Photographers: People in this role are assigned a few key events and subjects they need to photograph giving them access to all the events both on and off the slopes
- Welcome Host(ess): People in this role are here to welcome our guests to the various events, check tickets, etc..
- GEO's Guest Experience Officers: People in this role are very outgoing and their main task is to have fun and engage our guests. Do you see some alone in a corner? It is your role to welcome that person to the event(s) and introduce them to other people and help them feel welcomed. We have people coming in from all over the world and some for the first time, so we want to ensure everyone feels like family and has an opportunity to be as engaged as they want... sometimes even nudging their comfort zone just a little!

Program Highlights
Dates
WinterPride is Sunday, January 30 through Sunday, February 6. GUIDING IS MONDAY, JAN. 31-SATURDAY, FEB. 5.
Traditional Program
Our traditional program continues this year meeting between Blackcomb and Whistler. This year we'll be able to get back to Creekside!
ATAC!
ATAC stands for All Terrain, All Conditions. This is going to be the new name of our experts-only program.
Women’s guiding program
If there are enough women for a group, they will once again have the opportunity to ski or ride in women-only groups by meeting at specific women’s guiding signs. Obviously not all will take advantage of this, but we want to offer this service to help continue to build the women’s program.
Scheduling
Since we have a much better understanding of our day-to-day needs, scheduling will be specific this year. We will, of course, do the absolute best we can to accommodate your schedule. BTW, we already know we need you on Thursday, Friday and Saturday! LOL!
Minimum Volunteer Requirements
We ask that all guides, volunteer a minimum of 2 days. And our preference is that those two days include either Thursday, Friday, or Saturday if possible.

Training Requirements
We have new rules this year. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY. If you guided and received training last year, you DO NOT need to attend on-snow training this year AS LONG AS you attend the Sunday, January 30 guide meeting/party that will be held on the evening of Sunday, January 30 in the WinterPride hospitality suite area. If you can not make that, YOU MUST attend one of the on-snow training sessions either Saturday, January 8 or Sunday, January 30. The only exceptions are Whistler Blackcomb ski instructors and volunteer guides. If you did not guide last year, you will need to attend on-snow training. Please don't ask for an exception - I can't make it.

Positions Available
This year, there are three distinct positions in the guiding program.
Guide - Responsible for safely guiding WinterPride groups of varying ability.
Sign Master - Responsible for strategically placing signs in the Go Zone.
Pod Leader - Responsible for greeting and interviewing guests to determine the best group. You will coordinate guest assignments for a specific level or program such as green, black, women's program, ATAC!, etc. You will also be responsible for getting guest counts for each group and turning them into John.

- Every guide will get 1 apres ski ticket for each day they guide
- Daily lift tickets will be provided by Whistler/Blackcomb if you do not have a Season's Pass

GayWhistler on the Road - conference Season!

Wow, it must be that time of year again... Ken & Dean are on the road again and October, November are shaping up to be a busy travel month for us.

Our first stop will be to attend the 2010 InterPride Conference & Long Beach Pride Celebrations Oct. 21-24, 2010. If you are in the Long Beach area, please make sure you stop by and say hi! We are so excited to be attending where we can share some of our experiences in producing Whistler's WinterPRIDE as well as the 2010 Olympic Pride House Pavilion and what some of our future plans are. The last time I attended the conference was in Zurich and met so many wonderful people and learned so much on how to improve on what we are doing and how we can support those prides still in conflict.

Our second stop will be to attend the 2010 CMI LGBT Tourism Conference at the Mirage in Las Vegas. Tom Roth and his team always puts on an exciting and educational conference. Ken will be speaking at one of the workshops and sharing some of our experience in producing events. If you are in Vegas, make sure to check out the seminar and of course come by and say hello!

Our third stop will take us North to Toronto to attend Travel Gay Canada's first LGBT Tourism Conference at the Intercontinental Hotel. Whistler Mountain OPENING this Saturday, Nov. 14 - that's 12 days earlier than the official opening day on Nov. 26. A series of storms have pummeled Whistler Blackcomb, dropping 70cm-100cm over the last seven days. Another 65cm of snow is expected to fall by Saturday. Our operations crews have been hard at work preparing the mountain, including our Snowmaking Team, which has more than 160+ snowguns blasting to compliment Mother Nature's white gold.

Whistler Mountain is opening this weekend with upload via the Whistler Village Gondola. Skiing will be available via Franz's Chair, Emerald Express and Big Red Express.

InterPride Announces Historical Participation in PRIDE House at the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games

GayWhistler Welcomes the InterPride Organization as its latest sponsor of the historical PRIDE Pavilion that spans the Olympics, WinterPRIDE and the Paralympic Winter Games

Whistler, BC – GayWhistler, the producers of the annual WinterPRIDE festival and of PRIDE House, are excited to announce InterPride, Inc (The International Association of Pride Organizers) as one of their latest sponsors of the LGBT Pride Pavilion due to open February 8th, 2010. The goal of Pride House is to help commemorate and enhance the Olympic experience by including all people and celebrating diversity while creating a dialogue on homophobia and transphobia within sports. Pride House will represent the global LBGT* community while InterPride will represent Pride organizations worldwide. It will offer athletes and visitors attending the Olympics and Paralympics a new perspective on the Games.

Mark F. Chapman, Co-President of InterPride said “this is a ground-breaking initiative and will enlighten the world with the human right inequalities existing for millions of LGBT* people around the world”.

Search for LGBT Athletes for 2010 Olympic Fearless Project

Dear LGBT’er or ally,

We wanted to let you know about an exciting artistic project involving LGBT athletes now coming to Canada as part of the 2010 Pride House as we are hoping you (or someone you know) will want to participate.

For the last 5 years, Jeff Sheng has been photographing athletes on high school, college and university varsity sports teams who also openly identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans. The project is called "Fearless" and so far it has been mostly based in the United States, where Jeff has photographed almost 90 athletes, and has been exhibited at over 40 venues, including ESPN headquarters in the US and the LGBT International Human Rights conference in Copenhagen in 2009. Thanks to a grant by the St. Paul's Hospital Foundation in Vancouver and efforts by the GayWhistler’s PRIDE House in partnership with Qmunity in Vancouver, we are very excited to be expanding "Fearless" into Canada. Jeff Sheng will be in Vancouver and Whistler photographing for the project in a few weeks (November 19-22). We are currently looking for any volunteers who would like to participate, specifically out LGBT athletes who play sports on their high school, college or university varsity team, or those who may be training full-time as high performance athletes. We are hoping to have a range of LBGT athletes from different winter and summer sports, both able-bodied athletes and athletes with a disability.

If you are (or know of) an LGBT athlete who is not out, an aspect of the project that we are introducing for the Canadian project is also collecting anonymous stories/testimonials as to why athletes are not able to be out in their sport.

The Canadian version of Fearless will be exhibited at the first ever Pride House during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Whistler and Vancouver.

So, if you would like to participate, please let us know. Or, if you know of someone who might like to participate, please do pass this email on.

Whistler, Canada to Host Mr. Gay World Competition

Oslo, Norway (Nov.10/08)– The first global search for Mr. Gay World is set to take place February 4-8, 2009. Hosted in the idyllic mountain resort of Whistler, Canada, home of the 2010 Winter Olympic & Paralympics Games the newly branded global competition’s primary purpose is to identify leaders who will take responsibility not only in his own community but also on a global stage speaking out for equal rights. Mr. Gay World is a positive role model and will work on humanizing being gay and act as an LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) Ambassador on an international platform.

Setting the stage of the inaugural event as Executive Producers is GayWhistler’s WinterPRIDE. “We are so thrilled to welcome the Mr. Gay World organization to be an integral part of this year’s WinterPRIDE Festival” explains Dean Nelson, Chief Executive Officer of Alpenglow Productions, the producers of WinterPRIDE. “We are working with some really creative ways in which we are able to weave this global competition into the festival and add a much richer and exciting experience to both the delegates, the participants of the festival and as well as, the community of Whistler.”

Award winning artist, Terry Costa, from Mirateca Arts, has been recruited to direct the finale to Mr. Gay World on Saturday, February 7th. The event will be hosted by Olympic medal winner Mark Tewksbury and Costa promises that “the wow factor will be present to delight the international talent and patrons that will join the WinterPRIDE festivities in Whistler.”

The Mr. Gay World Competition will see 24 men vie for the covenant title in a 4-day, indoor/outdoor series of events to help a panel of judges identify a strong leader that will inspire those around him and fight for equality of all humans. The competition includes physical tests and interviews. Majority of the scoring are on qualities of being a role model, leader, effective communicator, compassionate, articulate and a willingness to try new things and meet new people. The remaining points are reserved for how well the delegate looks after himself. The winner of the competition will receive a scholarship for the opportunity to travel to various countries to help support or mentor Prides and other LGBT organizations.
